La Romareda Stadium in Zaragoza
Zaragoza was chosen as one of three subsites where the football competitions for the Olympics would be held, along with Valencia and Sabadell.
It wasn’t necessary to make adaptation works at the Estadio La Romareda since a few years earlier, during the World Cup in 1982, 600 million pesetas (3.606 million euros) were invested in renovations. The stadium holds 45,000 spectators.
Zaragoza is the capital of the autonomous community of Aragon and is a major industrial and commercial center. It is located 320 km from Barcelona. The city was founded in Roman times under the name Caesaraugusta and retains architectural remains of the most important styles from Roman times to the present day.
Sports Tradition
Zaragoza has a great football tradition. Its main team is the Real Zaragoza, founded in 1932 from the merger of Iberia and Zaragoza clubs, and plays in the Estadio La Romareda since 1957, year when it was build. This stadium had already hosted three matches during the World Cup held in Spain in 1982.
