At a time when the warmth with which the public had welcomed the Olympic Games could still be felt, the Paralympic torch relay was a foretaste of people’s support for the Paralympic Games. The torch’s route through thirty municipalities in the Barcelona metropolitan area in the four days before the opening ceremony was the fisrt, massively popular, act of the Games.

From 31 August to 3 September, the hundreds of thousands of people who, in the streets or from their houses, greeted the torch, became bearers of the message of peace and solidarity inherent to the Paralympic Games. This was made possible by all the local councils and civic groups who had worked for months in advance preparing acts of welcome along the torch relay.

40% of the 500 bearers of the torch were people with some type of disability. Also, many of the bearers were well-known faces: sportsmen, politicians, actors and musicians.
