There was a significant increase in the number of teams participating in the Barcelona’’92 Olympic Games, with a total of 9,959 athletes. In addition to the athletes, there were 4,845 team officials and 1,966 other team personnel, all of whom were duly accredited. The increase in the number of national teams was mainly due to the fact that the Barcelona’92 Olympic Games were the first to be held after the formation of multiple states of the former Soviet Union. There were also national teams from states of the former Yugoslavia.

In total, there were 172 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), 13 more than in the previous Olympic Games. Sports participation also increased as result of sports such as badminton and baseball being recognised as official, and also as a result of three demonstration sports: roller hockey, Basque pelota and taekwondo. There was also an increase in the number of events, with the inclusion of whitewater slalom, which had been absent since Munich’72.

In many instances, the new modalities also helped to improve the participation of women. This was particularly the case for women’s judo, the Lechner A-390 and Europe sailing classes, and the 10km race walk in athletics. Such increases in sports participation led to a 10% increase in the number of medals in comparison to Seoul’’88.
